Who is Steve Gerber?? - He's still alive in our heart!!

Stephen Ross "Steve" Gerber (September 20, 1947 - February 10, 2008) was an American comic book writer best known as co-creator of the satiric Marvel Comics character Howard the Duck.

He was 60. Gerber, who also co-created Marvel's "Omega the Unknown" and created the 1980s animated series "Thundarr the Barbarian," suffered from pulmonary fibrosis.

He died Sunday in a Las Vegas hospital from complications related to the disease, said Mary Skrenes, a friend and writing partner on "Omega" and other comics.

The "Howard the Duck" series became a fast hit after its January 1976 debut on Marvel and remains a cult favorite. Its lead, a disgruntled duck from another universe with a bombshell sidekick named Beverly "Thunder-Thighs" Switzler, was hailed as both smart and subversive.

Other major works include Man-Thing, Omega the Unknown, Void Indigo, Tales of the Zombie, Marvel Spotlight: Son of Satan, The Defenders, Marvel Presents: Guardians of the Galaxy, Foolkiller, Nevada, Sludge, A. Bizarro, and Hard Time.

He was among the 1970s wave of writers such as Steve Englehart, Don McGregor and Doug Moench who took often minor characters and helped create a writerly Renaissance. At the time of his death, he was writing Countdown to Mystery: Doctor Fate for DC Comics, having briefly worked with a version of the character in 1983.

More recently, Gerber and Skrenes created "Hard Time" for DC Comics, the story of a 15-year-old boy convicted in a Columbine-like school shooting who discovers he has special powers. Gerber was working on a revival of the DC Comics' Dr. Fate series at the time of his death.

He was also known for including lengthy text pages in the midst of a comic book story, such as in Man-Thing, Howard the Duck, Son of Satan, Defenders, and his graphic novel, Stewart the Rat.

Sarkozy red-faced as naked pictures of 'wife' Carla Bruni are posted on internet

Sarkozy red-faced as naked pictures of 'wife' are posted on internet

Sensational pictures of Nicolas Sarkozy's reported wife Carla Bruni posing naked have left the French President red-faced after being posted on the Internet.

The racy photographs, including a shoot the model did for Playboy, appeared as the leader attempted to halt his slide in the polls by proving himself to be serious again.

But the pictures of Miss Bruni, 39, will not help Mr Sarkozy's image which has been badly damaged by what many see as his playboy antics - and lack of focus on running the country.

Bruni says marriage with Sarkozy is 'till death'

Bruni says marriage with Sarkozy is 'till death'

In her first interview since marrying French President Nicolas Sarkozy, singer Carla Bruni on Wednesday described their love-affair as instantaneous, said her husband was much misunderstood, and pledged they would be together "until death".

"I am Italian by culture and I would not like to divorce. So I shall be the first lady till the end of my husband's mandate and his wife up until death," she told L'Express magazine, 11 days after the couple's wedding at the Elysee palace on February 2.

The 40 year-old ex-model sought to dispel charges that they have put their romance on public display, and promised to apply herself seriously to her new role as first lady.

The interview was seen as an attempt to woo public opinion at a time when her husband's poll ratings have slumped badly -- largely as a result of the perception that he is too preoccupied with his glamorous new bride.

But Bruni's hopes of winning hearts and minds were knocked off course by a row over her remarks comparing a French magazine to the wartime anti-Semitic press.

The president's wife was forced to issue an apology to Le Nouvel Observateur, which is being sued by the Elysee over the publication on its Internet site of a text message purportedly sent by Sarkozy to his ex-wife Cecilia asking her to come back.

In the interview with L'Express Bruni asked, "If this kind of site had existed in the war, what would have happened with the denunciation of the Jews?". Later she issued a statement, saying that "If I have offended anyone, I am extremely sorry."

An Italian heiress who made a fortune in modelling before a second successful career as a pop-folk singer, Bruni said she was smitten by Sarkozy, 53, the moment that they met.

"When I am near him, the anxiety I have had since being a child disappears. People tell me it all happened too quickly. It's not true. Between Nicolas and me, it wasn't fast, it was instantaneous... Lovers have their own rhythm. Ours is up-tempo," she said.

Bruni said she had felt "submerged" by the "tidal-wave" of interest sparked by their affair, which was like nothing she had experienced in her life as a super-model, but she rebutted accusations that they actively courted media attention.

"Whatever is not secret is immediately said to have been 'put on display'," she said.

Bruni said she had expected before meeting Sarkozy to be impressed by his "courage and energy", but instead found herself admiring his "flexibility of spirit, which comes perhaps from the fact that he is sure of his identity and values."

"I would not have married a man who would not let me think freely, speak freely, be who I am," said Bruni, who has been identified with the political left.

Describing him as "brave", "protective" "unconventional" and "uncorruptible", she said Sarkozy was "a man on the move, who is only happy when advancing. Life with him is always going somewhere ... he is a singular personality, quite different from his public image."

Asked about her role as first lady, Bruni said that when she has finished recording her current album of songs, she will stop work as a musician till Sarkozy's mandate is finished.

"It is a great adventure to be with the man who governs France ... I don't know yet what I can make of the job of first lady, but I know how I am going to do it: seriously," she said.

"I can see that people are concerned about who I am, especially after all these far-fetched and often terrible profiles that have been done of me. But I want to reassure the French. I am 40, I am normal, serious, aware, simple, even if I have had a life of privilege.

"I am proud and happy to be the first lady of France. I will do my best," she said.

Hot News - French singer Henri Salvador dies aged 90

Overview of Henri Salvador

Henri Salvador (born July 18, 1917, death February 13, 2008) was a French singer. His father, Clovis, and his mother, Antonine Paterne, daughter of a native Indian from the Caribbean, were both from Guadeloupe, France.

Born in Cayenne, French Guiana, his musical career began as a guitarist accompanying other singers. He had learned the guitar by imitating Django Reinhardt's recordings, and was to work alongside him in the 1940s.

Salvador recorded several songs written by Boris Vian with Quincy Jones as arranger. He is known to have recorded the first French Rock'n Roll in 1956 written by Boris Vian and Michel Legrand.

In the sixties Salvador was the host of several popular television variety shows on French TV.

In 1964 he scored a hit with "Zorro est arrivé" (which was inspired by The Coasters' U.S. hit "Along Came Jones"). He is also famous for his rich, catchy laugh, which is a subject in many of his humorous songs.

In 1969, Henri Salvador recorded a variation of "Mah Nà Mah Nà" titled "Mais Non, Mais Non" ("But No, But No" or "Of Course Not, Of Course Not"), with lyrics he had written in French to Piero Umiliani tune.

Henri Salvador and his song "Dans mon île" (1957) was an influence on Antônio Carlos Jobim in formulating the Brazilian Bossa Nova style.[citation needed]

Caetano Veloso, a famous Brazilian composer and singer, made Henri Salvador famous to Brazilian audiences with the song "Reconvexo", in which he says "quem não sentiu o swing de Henri Salvador?" ('who hasn't felt the swing of Henri Salvador?')

He had a brother, André, and a sister, Alice. He became a musician and comedian. Later he discovered singers Keren Ann and Art Mengo.

Henri continues to be popular today among French communities in Canada. In 2000, Virgin Records released a CD featuring popular hits like "Jazz Mediterrannee" which continues to receive regular air play. In 2002 his album 'Chambre Avec Vue' sold over two million copies. In 2005, Henri Salvador was awarded the Brazilian Order of Cultural Merit, which he received from the acclaimed singer and Minister of Culture, Gilberto Gil, in the presence of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva for his influence on Brazilian culture, particularly on bossa nova, to whose invention he contributed. He was also a commander of the French Légion d'honneur and of the National Order of Merit. In 2007 he released "Reverence" on V2 Records which features Gilberto Gil and Caetano Veloso. He then went on to perform the track "La Vie C'est La Vie" from the album "Reverence" on the BBC programme "Later... With Jools Holland," which aired on 4th May 2007. He died in the early morning on February 13, 2008.

French singer Henri Salvador dies aged 90

French crooner Henri Salvador, who first went on stage in the cabarets of pre-war Paris and played guitar with Django Reinhardt, died in Paris on Wednesday aged 90, his record company said.

An all-round entertainer with an infectious laugh, Salvador helped introduce France to rock'n'roll, inspired the invention of bossa nova in Brazil and was a pioneer of the music video.

Spry as a bird, Salvador was performing on stage right up until the end of last year. He died at his Paris home of a brain haemorrhage, according to Polydor records.

President Nicolas Sarkozy, who flew back Tuesday from Salvador's native French Guiana, paid tribute to a departed "friend".

"Upon my return from Guiana, I learned with infinite sadness of the death of one of its most eminent children, my friend Henri Salvador."

"His tunes and inimitable velvet voice will stay with us for a long time," Sarkozy said in a statement, describing him as a much-loved "icon" for young French singers.

Born in 1917, Salvador spent 73 years pleasing the public with his mix of hoofing, goofing and chanson -- inspired at an early age by jazz legends Louis Armstrong and Duke Ellington.

"Sometimes I say to myself -- 'Bloody hell, you're nearly 90!' Luckily my wife is on hand to remind me that I've never looked my age, " he told AFP with a cackle in an interview last year, as he prepared for his farewell tour.

"It's like a drug. I remember one of the first times I went on a really big stage was in Brazil in the war, when I had to perform before tens of thousands of American soldiers.

"I did my first gag, and suddenly there was this roar coming from the audience. It hit me like a wave of pleasure, and I remember thinking, so that's what its like, " he said.

Salvador's love-affair with the audience began in 1933 when as a young musician-cum-funnyman he got his first slots on the Paris nightclub scene.

He was spotted at the age of 16 by jazz guitarist Django Reinhardt who took him on as an accompanist, and he then joined the black American jazz violinist Eddie South.

In World War II, Salvador found himself on the French Riviera where he was recruited by band-leader Ray Ventura. Ventura was Jewish and Salvador was black so their decision to leave Vichy France, the wartime regime that collaborated with the Nazis, was opportune.

Later Salvador established himself in Paris as a songwriter and performer, and in 1956 crossed the Atlantic for a song'n'dance engagement on the Ed Sullivan show, the hugely popular US TV variety series.

Inspired by the new sounds sweeping the United States, he teamed up with French cult writer Boris Vian to make some of France's first rock'n'roll hits.

Around this time his song "Dans mon Ile" (In my island) inspired the Brazilian musician Tom Jobin, regarded as the inventor of bossa nova. Jobin later told Salvador that hearing the song gave him the idea of slowing down the samba beat and introducing more melody.

In the 1960s Salvador had a series of novelty hits such as "Juanita Banana," "Twist SNCF" and "Minnie Petite Souris" (Minnie the little mouse), all of them accompanied by humorous film-clips that were the precursor of today's music videos -- and are now easy to view on the Internet.

Since then he was never far from the public eye, with television variety shows, concerts and new albums -- of which the latest, "Reverence" (Final Bow), came out in 2006.

Salvador said he put his longevity down to an innately sunny temperament. "When you are a little baby, everything is beautiful. Luckily with me that never changed."

"Maurice Chevalier died at 84, Charles Trenet died at 86," he said in reference to two other great French crooners. "Here am I still at it, at nearly 90. So maybe it's time to stop. I won't miss it. I love my bed too much."

Hot News-Dwayne Michael Carter Jr on felony drug and weapons charges

A jury has indicted Lil Wayne on felony drug and weapons charges
The 25-year-old rapper, whose name is Dwayne Michael Carter Jr., was charged with one count each of possession of a narcotic drug for sale, possession of dangerous drugs, misconduct involving weapons and one count of possession of drug paraphernalia, according to the indictment.
Carter pleaded not guilty at his arraignment Friday.

His attorney, James Tilson, said Tuesday that Carter's tour would continue as scheduled.

Carter is due back in court March 7 for a status hearing.

The rapper's tour bus was stopped Jan. 22 at a U.S. Border Patrol checkpoint near Dateland, Ariz., 78 miles east of Yuma. Federal agents searched the bus and found nearly four ounces of marijuana, just over an ounce of cocaine, 41 grams of Ecstasy and miscellaneous drug paraphernalia, authorities said. Carter was then arrested.

Agents also found a .40-caliber pistol registered to Carter, who has a concealed weapons permit in Florida, officials said. In October, Carter and several other rappers were named in a federal lawsuit filed by music publishing companies, accusing them of sampling other artists' songs without paying licensing fees.

Birdman and Lil Wayne won a viewers' choice award for their song "Stuntin' Like My Daddy" at Black Entertainment Television's 2007 Hip-Hop Awards.

The rapper-Juvenile & marijuana in his car! Gotcha!

The rapper-Juvenile & marijuana in his car
The rapper known as Juvenile was arrested Tuesday after police pulled him over for an expired tag and found marijuana in his car, authorities said.

Juvenile, a 32-year-old whose real name is Terius Gray, was arrested on misdemeanor marijuana possession after he was stopped on Interstate 20 near Meridian, Lauderdale County Sheriff William Sollie said.

"A small amount of marijuana was seized and he was placed under arrest," Sollie said.

Juvenile, who lives in New Orleans, was released later Tuesday.

It was not immediately clear whether he had an attorney, and a woman who answered the telephone at a listing for a T. Gray declined to confirm that it was the rapper's residence.

The rapper, best known for the song "Back That Thing Up," was headed from Atlanta to New Orleans when his car was pulled over, Sollie said. At least one other person was in the car, but no one else was charged, he said.

Juvenile has been arrested at least four times on charges ranging from failure to pay child support to resisting an officer in a scuffle at a Florida mall in 1999. Most of the charges have been dismissed.

In 2003, he pleaded guilty to felony battery and was sentenced to 75 hours of community service for hitting a man on the head with a champagne bottle.

The Future is Finally Here-Brittney Griner

No one knows yet how big. While Griner was having partially torn ligaments in her right ankle examined about a month ago, her father had doctors x-ray her growth plates. The plates still are about a half inch apart, the elder Griner said, and she could grow to about 6-9 or 6-10 by the time she graduates from high school. Right now, she's all limbs, with arms that extend like a cast fishing line. Raymond Griner is only 6-2, but says a strain of height runs through the Griner bloodlines, including a pair of non-hooping nieces who are about 6-7.

Size alone doesn't tell the tale of Brittney Griner. Size, combined with how fluid an athlete she is, blows the mind. She can beat most guards down the floor, and often tries to. Griner once ripped a rebound off the glass against the Alabama RoadRunners, dribbled the length of the floor and, with the crowd practically begging for an aerial exhibition, delivered a layup because she had to factor in a change of direction. She is nimble, rather than forceful, around the basket and not yet strong enough in the lower body to hold her ground against leveraged defenders or in the upper body to battle the multiple defenders who hang off her arms like extra appendages. In an effort to address some of that, Raymond Griner has converted his dining room into a workout station for Brittney, complete with treadmill, stationary bicycle and other assorted exercise equipment.

NBA rejected Brittney Griner??

Which brings us to our question: Could Brittney Griner one day play in the NBA?She seems to have some of the tools. She's 6'8" and growing, is just 16 and, from the limited footage that I've seen of her, looks pretty quick on her feet and comfortable with the ball. With a few solid years of coaching, you'd have to at least consider it a possibility, right?Well, no. And here's why: While Griner's 6'8" frame might make her the swat-blocking Gheorge Muresan of Texas women's high school basketball, it would mean nothing in the NBA. Can you imagine her trying to defend someone as athletic and strong as Rudy Gay or Andre Iguodala? It would be impossible.I'm still convinced that the first woman to play in the NBA will actually be a short, lightning-quick point guard with great decision-making skills and a jumpshot.
