Hot News : Oprah made several mistakes at her elite South African school?

JOHANNESBURG - Oprah Winfrey acknowledged in a newspaper interview published Saturday that she has made several mistakes at her elite South African school, but said she remains proud of its success.

Oprah Gail Winfrey (born January 29, 1954) is an American television presenter, media mogul and philanthropist. Her internationally-syndicated talk show, The Oprah Winfrey Show, has earned her multiple Emmy Awards and is the highest-rated talk show in the history of television. She is also an influential book critic, an Academy Award nominated actress, and a magazine publisher. She has been ranked the richest African American of the 20th century, the most philanthropic African American of all time, and was once the world's only black billionaire. She is also, according to some assessments, the most influential woman in the world.

The recent expulsion of four girls and suspension of three others was the second scandal to hit the Leadership Academy for Girls, which opened in 2007 to groom bright children from deprived backgrounds for a brilliant career. A dorm matron is currently on trial accused of abuse and sexual assault.

"I have made several mistakes and one of them was being overprotective of the girls, which has led to an impression that the school is isolating them from society," Winfrey was quoted as saying in the Weekend Argus.

She said she had also underestimated the extent of homesickness among girls at the boarding school.

Last month, four students were expelled and three others suspended. South African media at the time said they were accused of trying to force students into relationships and to engage in sexual contact.

Winfrey herself hasn't given details of the misconduct. But she said in the newspaper interview that it was "insulting" that the family of one of the expelled girls had complained to the press even though she had been warned before about her behavior.

"Those girls in their own testimony during the (disciplinary) hearing said they knew they were breaking the rules and that they deliberately broke the rules," the talk show queen was quoted as saying.

The institution just outside Johannesburg opened with a blaze of publicity in January 2007 with about 150 girls in 7th and 8th grades. The Academy is expected to grow by one grade each year until it reaches full capacity in 2011, with approximately 450 girls in grades 7 through 12.

Winfrey poured $40 million into the 28-building campus, which is spread across 22 lush acres. It has computer and science labs, a library, theater and wellness center, all protected by strict privacy. Each girl lives in a two-bedroom suite a far cry from their humble surroundings at home.

It's the fulfillment of a promise Winfrey made to former South African President Nelson Mandela and aims to give poor girls a quality education and prepare them for leadership positions in a country where state schools are struggling to overcome the legacy of white-minority rule.

"The majority of girls are thriving, really fulfilling the dream and vision I had," Winfrey told the newspaper. "They really have exceeded any expectations I had for them."

"In spite of everything that's happened, what keeps me inspired and hopeful is the heart of every girl, because they are wonderful, they are magnificent."

HOT NEWS : CRACKER BARREL IT'S GOOD FOR YOU - DOLLY PARTON!

HOT NEWS : CRACKER BARREL IT'S GOOD FOR YOU - DOLLY PARTON!

In a deal that seems as natural as biscuits and gravy, Dolly Parton and Cracker Barrel Old Country Store have partnered to release "Backwoods Barbie: The Collector's Edition."

Dolly Rebecca Parton (born January 19, 1946) is a Grammy Award-winning American singer-songwriter, author, actress and philanthropist, known for her prolific work in country music. In the 44 years since her national chart debut, she remains the most successful female artist in the history of the genre, with 25 number-one singles (a record for a female artist), and a record 42 top-10 country albums. She has the distinction of having performed on a top-5 country hit in each of the last five decades and is the only artist to score a No. 1 country single in each of the past four decades

The project not only propelled the veteran entertainer back into the top 10 of Billboard's Top Country Albums chart but also became the first Cracker Barrel title to be tracked by Nielsen SoundScan.

"Our exclusive music program has grown to the point that participating in SoundScan just makes good sense," says Cracker Barrel vice president of marketing Peter Keiser.

Released March 24, "Collector's Edition" debuted at No. 9 on Top Country Albums and No. 40 on the Billboard 200, selling 12,000 copies its first week. Buoyed by Parton's April 5 appearance on "60 Minutes" and a continued push by Cracker Barrel, the set sold 10,000 units the following week, charting at No. 14 on the country list. The album features three cuts exclusive to Cracker Barrel and new packaging.

"Backwoods Barbie" originally bowed last year on Parton's Dolly Records. The title track will be featured in the Broadway musical "9 to 5," for which Parton wrote the score. The musical's formal premiere takes place April 30 at the Marquis Theater in New York.

"Me and Cracker Barrel have a lot in common: We're both Tennessee-based and country people," Parton said during a break from "9 to 5" rehearsals. "I thought we'd make a perfect pairing, and evidently it's working."

In addition to the CD, Cracker Barrel is selling a limited-edition pink rocking chair and collector's edition photo album. "We're proud of that chair," Parton says with a laugh. "We figured they needed a pink one out there. And the picture book is doing great. People like to follow their favorite artists and see what they've done through the years."

Cracker Barrel has partnered with Kenny Rogers, Amy Grant and other artists on CDs, but the Parton partnership is the first to include merchandise.

"Only 1,350 rockers were made, and we sold approximately 70 percent in the first two weeks," Keiser says. "The collector's edition photo album has sold more the first week than any book we've sold at Cracker Barrel."

Caruso paid an undisclosed sum in early 1995.He and former girlfriend Liza Marquez have two children together: a son, Marquez Anthony (born September 15, 2005), and daughter, Paloma Raquel (born October 16, 2007). He lives in Los Angeles and Miami with his girlfriend, aspiring actress Amina Tyrone.

In March 2009 an Austrian woman was placed in custody in Tyrol, Austria on charges of stalking Caruso; she had twice failed to appear in court to answer the charges before fled to Mexico; following her deportation from Mexico, Austrian officials took her into custody to await trial on the stalking charges.

A student residence hall at Southern Maine Community College was built with donations by Mr. Caruso, and is named Caruso Hall in his honor and a plaque of him in his characteristic stance is hanging in the entrance.

David Caruso was first seen on a national basis in a coffee commercial of the mid 1970s, in which he played a stockboy in Margaret Hamilton's general store. To pick up extra money between jobs, Caruso offered his services to the New York police department, where his punkish countenance came in handy in line-ups. This same street-smart quality enabled Caruso to win his first semi-regular TV series role in 1981, as the Irish-American gang leader "Shamrock" on Hill Street Blues. Subsequent film and TV assignments were in a similar supporting category (for example, Caruso played the panicky aviation candidate who "washes out" of training early-on in An Officer and a Gentleman [1984]). Caruso's first starring TV gig was on the short-lived 1990 cop series H.E.L.P., as officer Frank Sardoni. He continued in this Law Enforcement vein with the role of Det. John Kelly on TV's NYPD Blue (1993- ) produced by Caruso's old Hill Street Blues boss Stephen Bochco. This was Caruso's breakthrough into full stardom, and he remained with the series for a little over a season. After a highly publicized clash with the producers, David Caruso left NYPD Blue in 1995, parlaying his newfound celebrity into his first starring feature film, Kiss of Death (1995). ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

HOT NEWS: DAVID CARUSO'S EX-GIRLFRIEND IS SEEKING MORE THAN $1.2 MILL FROM HIM?

Caruso was born in Forest Hills, Queens, New York to Joan, a librarian, and Charles Caruso, a magazine and newspaper editor. He is of Irish and Italian descent and was raised Catholic. Caruso attended elementary and middle school at Our Lady Queen of Martyrs in Forest Hills, Queens, the same primary school attended by Ray Romano and Pia Zadora. He later attended Archbishop Molloy High School in Queens, N.Y., graduating in 1974. In 1987, Caruso was called upon to fill in for the leading role of Jean Valjean in Les Misérables on Broadway for 6 months.

David Caruso's ex-girlfriend is seeking more than $1.2 million and a house she says the "CSI: Miami" star promised her.

Liza Marquez sued Caruso in Los Angeles Superior Court on Thursday, claiming he promised to support her even after their nearly four-year relationship ended.

In her complaint, Marquez paints Caruso as a possessive, jealous boyfriend who was a reluctant father. The suit claims Caruso, 53, was verbally abusive to Marquez on several occasions and told her that he envisioned himself on a yacht in the French Riviera, not as a father.

Marquez's suit states she and Caruso started dating in April 2004 while she was working as a travel coordinator. The couple moved in together later that year, and Marquez claims she quit her job at Caruso's request. The suit states Caruso told Marquez that he would "always be there" to support her financially and in other ways.

Caruso was affectionate and caring in public, but withdrew from Marquez to a second home as the relationship deteriorated, the lawsuit states.

The lawsuit states Caruso ended their relationship two days after she gave birth to their second child in October 2007. It claims the couple later reached an agreement that that actor would pay Marquez $1 million and $200,000 in attorney's fees, and give her a home in the San Fernando Valley.

Caruso broke that agreement, and Marquez is seeking the deed to the house, $1.2 million and punitive damages for fraud and intentional infliction of emotional distress claims.

Stephen Kolodny, an attorney for Caruso, released a statement Thursday that said the lawsuit was filed with "false claims" and appears to be retaliation for Caruso seeking changes to the couple's custody arrangements.

Kolodny's statement says Caruso find the lawsuit "unfortunate since these claims will divert the parties and the court's attention away from the best interests of the children."

He said Caruso would have no further comment.

Caruso plays Horatio Caine on "CSI: Miami," which is in its seventh season on CBS and is consistently ranked among television's top-rated shows.

HARRY POTTER ACTOR HAS BEEN ARRESTED BY POLICE FOR CANNABIS??

Harry Potter actor has been arrested by police for cannabis??
A 19-year-old actor from the Harry Potter films has been arrested after police allegedly found cannabis in his car and his mother's home, reports and Scotland Yard said.
This actor James Waylett, who has played Vincent Crabbe in six Harry Potter movies and the upcoming Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, has been arrested for allegedly carrying drugs in his car along with his friend in central London on Tuesday.

James Waylett, who plays Vincent Crabbe, a Hogwart pupil and Potter-hating bully, was detained with another young man in central London last Thursday.

"Two 19-year-old occupants were found in the vehicle. Both men were arrested and taken to Central London police station," said a Scotland Yard spokesman, adding that officers later raided his mother's home in Camden, north London.

"Officers found a number of plants believed to be cannabis and equipment for the cultivation of plants," he added, saying both men were bailed until a date in July pending further inquiries.

At least 10 cannabis plants worth 2,000 pounds (2,900 dollars, 2,200 euros) were found, said media reports including the tabloid Sun, which printed the story under the headline "Harry Pothead."

The maximum punishment in Britain for cannabis production, which is considered a class B drug, is a 14-year jail sentence.

The latest Harry Potter film in which he stars, "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince," will be released in Britain in July 17.

Last month a 22-year-old man was jailed for at least 20 years for stabbing and killing another actor from the latest Potter film, Rob Knox, in May last year in southeast London.

The Harry Potter series of books by J.K. Rowling have sold over 400 million copies, been translated into 67 languages, and spawned a successful series of films and a theme park.
